Here are 4 of the best regtech freelancers

“Who are the best freelancers in regtech?”

As a freelance content marketer who’s been specializing in regtech for years now, I often find clients and collaborators struggling to find other freelancers who specialize in the industry. In fact, it’s been hard enough to find individuals to feature for this article, which is why there’s only four on the list.

Freelance graphic designers, paid ads specialists, videographers or content marketers aren’t hard to come by, but those with regulatory intelligence experience are. And while this doesn’t tend to matter in other industries, the nuance of compliance makes it harder to enter as a freelancer. For regtechs, this means qualifying your freelancers for demonstrated regtech experience before you begin working together. And that’s why I’ve put this piece together.

Without further ado, here is the list of recommended regtech freelancers:

  1. Noelle Huling - Red Flag Control Room

  2. Nathan Parker - Parker & Lawrence Growth Advisory

  3. Alison Ebbage - freelance journalist

  4. Shannon Trimble - The Search Cure

Noelle Huling - Red Flag Control Room

Noelle Huling is the founder and chief content specialist at Red Flag Control Room, specializing in content for leaders against financial crime.

A seasoned regtech expert

Noelle has been serving this space for around seven years. Her industry experience comes from four and a half years service as an analyst at a major prepaid payment services company, followed by tenure as a researcher and writer for ComplyAdvantage.

“Since then, I have founded an independent content agency specializing in anti-financial crime content for regtechs like my former employer”, said Noelle.

A dream client for the Red Flat Control Room would be an organization that’s truly passionate about righting the wrongs perpetrated within the fincrime cycle, that recognizes the value of authoritative content and is committed to investing in it for the right reasons.

Specialism: thought leadership content

Noelle excels in long and short-form marketing and thought leadership content to regtechs. She provides a rare combination of fincrime-related subject matter expertise and veteran writing and research skills, which can span many forms and use cases.

“Freelancers with these skills were hard to come by when I was a regtech employee, and I knew it was a niche that needed to be filled”, explained Noelle.

Noelle’s recent work includes an e-learning project with The Knoble, an organization working to educate the anti-fincrime community about the connection between financial crime and human crime (such as human trafficking and scams).

She said, “they are an amazing group, and I recommend any organization or individual that fights financial crime to apply to be a member. It’s free and offers access to valuable resources and networking opportunities - not to mention the chance to contribute to an amazing cause”.

Nathan Parker: Parker & Lawrence Growth Advisory

Nathan Parker is the co-founder of Parker & Lawrence Growth Advisory, and has been working with risk and regtech software providers for approximately six years. He describes himself as a senior research consultant and business writer.

Not just a freelancer; a ‘regtech business enabler’

Nathan describes himself as a business enabler, saying “I truly believe that effective and proactive compliance and risk management can be a business enabler. I’ve always been impressed by some of the capabilities offered by vendors in the market and I’m passionate about converting this message to the masses”.

He believes that automation should be at the heart of risk management, and in helping young firms to innovate for a truly positive change.

Data-led consultancy is Nathan’s speciality.

Specialism: research for regtechs

In a recent client experience, Nathan’s client required direct access to enforcement data from multiple regulators to predict trends and strengthen their market position.

Through a comprehensive data analysis and regulatory commentary, Nathan assessed enforcement data spanning five years from 11 different regulators. He was looking to uncover trends and patterns in e-comms surveillance.

The data led to a forward-looking analysis and regulatory commentary where Nathan predicted future trends and their potential compliance requirements.

Alison Ebbage: freelance regtech journalist

Alison has the longest career history on this list, with fintech and regtech experience for the best part of 20 years. During that time, she’s worked with:

  • B2b publications

  • Tech firms

  • And a directory of wealthtech vendors

Not afraid to challenge the status-quo

The ideal client for Alison would be a small vendor with a really punchy message.

“There is nothing worse than endless rounds of edits that don’t really add anything other than someone’s opinion because they feel the need to have an opinion”, said Alison. “A good client experience is one where we set out right at the beginning what we are going to achieve, how and how that will look. That means you don’t get scope creep.

She’s looking for clients who are not afraid to challenge conventional wisdom or state the obvious.

Specialism: tech in all its guises

Alison notes that she “just sort of fell into writing about the big back office lift-outs that were going on in the early 2000s… it sort of escalated! I love tech in all its guises and it’s fascinating to see how it evolves and mutates so quickly”.

She offers anything from LinkedIn posts to whitepapers. Clients benefit from having an expert who really understands the market and all its nuances, as well as a lot of historical context and knowledge.

Shannon Trimble - The Search Cure

Full disclosure - since I’m writing this article I thought it would make sense to explain my role in regtech. I’m Shannon, a freelance content marketer in fintech, regtech and cyber and founder of The Search Cure (one woman agency-style consultancy).

A blend of fintech, regtech and cybersecurity

Having worked in the industry for six years, I’ve freelanced with quite the range of companies. From pure regtechs like CUBE and Global Relay, to data experts like Experian, and fraud prevention organizations such as Trustpair.

I took my client, CoreIntegrator from zero leads from content over ten years to $160,000 in direct revenue within five months with content strategy and publication.

I’m known for being a proactive contributor to a regtech’s content strategy, not only a one-and-done writer. I like to add ideas and experiment, and my clients enjoy having a dedicated partner that feels more like an internal member of the team than an external consultant.

My dream client would be a regtech organization who has already streamlined their compliance process, making it easy for me to operate at full creativity to produce high-quality regtech content without feeling the boundaries of regulatory restrictions.

Specialism: longform technical writing

When I first transitioned towards regtech, I found a huge gap in the market - a lack of content for those familiar with regulatory intelligence and regulations themselves. So much of the content was saturated with beginner-style guides or glossary pieces, which would bore the average industry insider.

While I can certainly get into this type of content, I prefer to deep dive into technical topics and get into the ‘meat’ of a new idea. This means writing for those with medium or expert-level familiarity, and getting the right mix of jargon. That’s why I enjoyed writing Whitepapers for Bud about the back-end of their personalisation algorithm, and how they’re safeguarding open banking data as per PSD2/3 regulations.

One of my best tips for this type of content is including real-life examples, derived from experts in the niche. So I typically sit down and interview customer, product or compliance managers to include their original insights into my content.

How to get in touch

Here’s the easy part - you’re already on my website, so simply scroll down to the form below and fill in your details. I’ll get back to you within two working days, we can schedule a call to chat and figure out if I’d be a good fit for you (and vice versa).

Why search for a regtech freelance specialist?

Sure, you could just search for a generic freelancer who’s good at their craft. In most industries, this is absolutely the way to go as freelancers are versatile and flexible beings.

But in regulatory intelligence, topical expertise and first-hand experience of compliance challenges give freelancers the edge. Not least because they understand the pains of regulators and legislative bodies, and the need to always stay ahead of regulatory updates.

In reality, compliance departments add a whole host of extra barriers to getting work shipped. Delays, revisions and required language all add time and pressure challenges to regtech operations. Therefore, having a freelancer who is familiar with the industry will ensure they are patient and sympathetic to the situation.

Finally, the importance of data security cannot be understated, and working with a regtech specialist enables organizations to be confident in their staff. Freelancers without previous regtech experience may turn their nose up at processes with in-built compliance and information safeguarding. They may also grow frustrated at how inefficient these processes are, thanks to the extra security steps.

But experienced freelancers in regtech won’t bat an eyelid at the extra steps required to comply with regulations and go above-and-beyond to safeguard customer and client data as it flows through the departments.

How to qualify regtech freelancers

Building a roster of regtech freelancers is the dream for most marketing departments, as it’ll provide stability while your product evolves. Here’s how to qualify a freelancer for potential collaboration:

  1. Get a good look at their past work, including portfolio pieces before and after client edits

  2. Share information about your expectations, and processes to ensure they’re familiar with how you work

  3. Discuss the goals of your partnership and how you will measure the success of your progress

  4. Complete a (paid) trial project to ensure things are a good fit for both sides before you enter a long-term commitment

And finally, if you know of any expert regtech specialists that should be on this list, reach out and let me know! Let’s support the regtech community by recommending trusted graphic designers, fractional CMOs, videographers, ads specialists and more.
